What are equivalent fractions?

This is our baseline, where one out of two pieces is filled in. When we use SCALING UP, we MULTIPLY the top and bottom by the same number, like two-over-two. It doesn't change the amount of food you have; it just slices the pie into smaller pieces. See? Now we have TWO QUARTERS. The shaded area is the same size as before, but now it takes two smaller slices to fill that space. If we slice it again, we get FOUR EIGHTHS. Even though we have four pieces now, they're half the size of the quarters, keepin' everything perfectly balanced. Finally, SCALING DOWN is just the reverse gear.
