What is a volcano?

A volcano is basically Earth’s way of venting massive amounts of heat from deep underground. Deep in the crust, we find the MAGMA CHAMBER—think of it like a giant, pressurized reservoir holding all that superheated, molten rock. This is where the energy builds up before an eruption. When the pressure gets too high, the liquid rock is forced upward through the CONDUIT, which acts like a main vertical pipe connecting the deep chamber to the surface. Sometimes, smaller side-paths form, called a VENT. These are crucial because they allow trapped gases and steam to escape, which helps manage the intense internal pressure. At the very top, we see the CRATER—a bowl-shaped opening that stays open after an eruption occurs. Once that molten rock actually reaches the surface, it changes names and becomes a LAVA FLOW.
